my back-to-school IKEA essentials

As a sophomore returning to college, there was not much that I needed to buy, but there are definelty some "wants and needs" that I purchased.

First things first, I LOVE IKEA! Not just because of there ahhhmazin' prices, but because of the style. As a minimalist in training, I am learning to appreciate the Danish and Swedish style. It is a culture that seeks simplicity, but lives in an abundance of joy and the more important things.

Secondly, I have began using the Sabbath (and every day) to practice Hygee, which is a danish word for acknowledging a feeling or moment, whether alone or with friends, at home or out, ordinary or extraordinary as cosy, charming or special. This practice is such a self-care ceremony to just breathe in and be thankful or life. I might just have to write a post about this this fall!

Anyways, let's get into the actual reason for reading this blog post (typical midwesterner blabbering on (: ).

Here are the back-to-school purchases that I made at IKEA. All of the products are linked in the title of the product, in case you want to check them out! Because I am a college student, all of the prices are budget-friendly.

1) french press

Last semester, my roommate had a french press and at first I was skeptical. I used my coffee pot until I had a cup of french pressed coffee. I loved the process of using one and I love the taste of the coffee. It adds a deeper and richer taste! If you love a good cup of coffee, then I highly recommend you invest in one of these little suckers!

I am so excited to use this in my dorm this semester because I have a feeling there will be many late nights and group hangs in my dorm. P.S make sure you are using the correct grind of coffee because if you aren't, you will have loose coffee in your cup. Just give that a peek when purchasing or let the barista know before she grinds up your beans!

2) blankets and throws

I LOVE throws and blankets! I am constantly cold in my dorm room because I love the room hot and roommates don't (my problem, not theirs), so this means that I have to have throws by my side when I get cold. I picked these specific throws and blankets because one can be used as a scarf and one will be perfect for my desk and traveling!

Being cozy with a cup of coffee is one of my favorite things, so..french press + new throws = Hygee goddess. Maybe that is an understatement.. oh well. I also love the colors of these throw blankets because the are colorful, but not too dramatic that you can't match them with anything.

3) towels

I am in constant need of towels to dry my hands or face with, but I don't enjoy the look or feel of regular towels. Growing up my grandmas always had white linen towels that she dried her dishes with and now that I am buying for my own "home" it only make sense that those are the type of towels that I buy. You are probably thinking that I am crazy because towels help my dorm feel like home, but they do and they keep the bathroom looking light.

I also love these linen towels because they don't take up a ton of space when you're packing up your room like normal towels do!

4) dish brush

When you cook any food in college, you do not have a dishwasher that you can throw your dishes into, so this little sucker comes in handy. I passed this little guy and he was 49 cents, um I'll take 6?! Just kidding, I bought one. A dish brush will be awesome for cleaning coffee mugs, water bottles and any other dishes.

So, that concludes my college IKEA haul. Let me know in the comments one lifestyle/house essential that you cannot live without, mine would be a coffee pot or a deep sink!!

I move into my dorm in 2 days!! I can't believe that it is already time to go back to school!

much love,
